  • Step 1 of 2: What is the diagnosis?

A mesothelioma diagnosis considered to be in “Stage 1,” is the earliest and most localized form of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma in the first stage has not yet metastasized (spread) to other parts of the body, and in itself is subsequently divided into two stages, Stage 1A and Stage 1B.

Stage 1A mesothelioma refers to parietal cancer localized only on the outer lining of the pleura. In contrast, Stage 1B mesothelioma refers to visceral cancer localized on only the inner lining of the pleura.

While such an early diagnosis is rare, treatment options for mesothelioma patients in stage 1 are often vast with positive probabilities of achieving remission or a cure for the patient, resulting in longer life expectancies than patients diagnosed with more advanced stages of mesothelioma. The available possible curative options include curative surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.

In Stage 1 Mesothelioma, the cancer is localized on one side of the chest, has not deviated from its origin, and can be found in any of the following:

  • Lining of chest wall
  • Lining between chest wall and lungs
  • Lining of diaphragm
